FLY FISHING CLASS 2025
If you have never touched a fly rod before, or if you have some experience but want to learn more about fly fishing, this class is for you. The class is informal, fun and class size is limited to 8. We will have both classroom and On-stream instruction. The class is taught by local flyfishers with many years of experience. No equipment is needed.
Classes are held on four Saturday Mornings at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and are co-sponsored by the Westchester County Parks. The location is perfect since we can move straight from the classroom to the stream.
We cover all the basics of fly fishing in a personal way that is hard to get from books or YouTube videos. Click the link below for a full class description.
You don’t need equipment—While you probably want to dash out and start buying equipment, we recommend that you stop and wait. There is no need to rush into anything. The classes will review equipment options. By waiting, we believe you will make a better long term decision. Keep in mind that the Chapter can supply rods and reels during the class so you can try before you buy. But if you have a rod and reel, bring them to the class.
You will need a New York State Fishing License and a New York City Department of Environmental Protection Access Permit to fish. They can be obtained online.
The class costs $150. All proceeds go to supporting the Trout in the Classroom Program. Below is the tentative agenda for the class. Note that we are flexible depending upon the weather and level of the students. Note that you are free to fish in Ward Pound Ridge after class.
The classes are held at the visitor center at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. Class dates are April 5,12,19,26, 2025. from 8:30 to 12:00. We will also have a special fishing day on a local stream on Saturday, May 3. Class size is limited to 8. You must be over 18.

FLY TYING CLASS
Next classes begin April 5, 2025
For more than 35 years our chapter has offered fly fishing and tying classes to area anglers. Our instructors are among the most experienced fly fishers in the area. Most have been fly fishing our local waters for decades.
The Fly Tying School teaches the basics of fly tying. It is designed for anglers who have at least two or three years of fly fishing experience. Participants generally fall into three groups. Some are new fly fishers who want to take their game to the next level; some are self-taught tyers who want to brush up on technique; others might have learned to tie one or two patterns and now want to learn the right way.
You don’t need any tools to get started. During the first class we’ll take an in depth look at tools and materials and make recommendations that will keep you happy over the long haul. We have some loaner equipment, too.
We start tying during Week 1. Every week our instructors will take you, step by step, through new patterns. They will start every pattern with a video that shows you how to tie the pattern. They then work with you as you tie the pattern. We supply all of the materials you need, too. At the end of each class you will receive written instructions so you can practice at home.
Every pattern we tie is selected for two reasons. First, we cover the basics. You will tie the tried and true patterns. Second, we concentrate on techniques that let you move beyond the basics so that you will be able to successfully tie on your own.
Classes will be held on four Saturday afternoons from 12:00 to 3:00 PM on April 5, 12, 19 and May 3. See the Curriculum below. The classes take place in WPA Gallery near the entrance to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. The class fee is $150. All proceeds from the class go the conservation and education programs of the Croton Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
